iv. worldbuilding
PROBUS IS AN OPEN WORLD
Collaborative worldbuilding is a major aspect of this forum. Staff provide little-to-no-guidance on the setting/plot, and it is exclusively the responsibility of players to shape the world.
As a shared world, we have some community guidelines.
[attr="class","rules"]
WORLD-BUILDING POLICY
(01) Nothing is considered canon unless it is added to the Library.(02) Everything added to the Library must have a citation, ideally derived from Quest Reports. New articles in the Library require references from two unique players.(03) Engage in additive worldbuilding. Anything that you add to the world must be additive. It should not restrict the ability of other players to add something more to the world.
- Bad: "Belusia is the closest city to Myrtle Village."
- Good: "Belusia is a city close to Myrtle Village."
- Bad: "Goroth is the only dragon in Scribel Forest."
- Good: "Goroth is a dragon in Scribel Forest."
- Bad: "Smith is the best blacksmith in Styre."
- Good: "Smith is one of the best blacksmiths in Styre."
(04) Avoid omniscient and infallible knowledge. Do not presume that anyone knows everything about the world. At best, treat everyone as an unreliable narrator. When Villager A claims that "all goblins are evil", assume that is opinion and not fact.(05) Be a good steward of the environment. Please leave the setting as good as you found it. As a general rule of thumb, do not burn down entire forests, raze cities, or cause mountains to explode. Do not break the quest board.(06) Seek community agreement for large changes. If you are aiming for a plot development that affects multiple players, discuss it OOC first. Try to find at least 3 players interested in an event (e.g. orc invasion) before kicking it into action.
THE WORLD OF PROBOS
The world of Probos is a generic medieval fantasy setting. Please refrain from adding too much futuristic technology.
The world is apparently Earth-like, albeit infinitely sized with odd geography. Most animals and plants found on Earth can be found on Probos, in addition to monsters and fauna unique to Probos. Most players arrive with an ability to understand the local language, so assume that everything is automatically translated to English.
Magic and gods exist in Probos, but they do not adhere to a single system. The laws of physics are totally broken / inconsistent in unpredictable ways, so don't try to rationalize a universal system that covers everything. It is totally okay for different characters to use different systems of magic.
Most Otherworlders who end up in Probos have their abilities severely weakened or sealed. Former magicians are expected to relearn magic entirely, demigods are unable to materialize their abilities, brawler athletes find their muscles/reflexes dulled, and sci-fi characters from futuristic settings discover their equipment broken due to inexplicable differences in the physics.
MYRTLE VILLAGE
Myrtle Village is a small tropical island village inhabited by mermaids (and mermen) who have the ability to shapeshift into human forms. It is generally poor and weak. There are very few goods or amenities found in the local market, and your characters are unlikely to find a blacksmith or magic store.
Myrtle Village is intended as a tutorial area for new players. Do not expand Myrtle Village, add resources, or introduce more powerful monsters in the area.
NEW REGIONS
Players are encouraged to discover new regions by having their characters travel to new areas. Users should create Custom Quests for any new regions to increase traffic to the area.
A new region is a country, kingdom, state, or large area. Once references from three players are made, a new region board will be created.
