[attr="class","graves"] Did you know that this actually Version 4 of the Adventurer's Guild? In this thread, I'll briefly summarize our history.
Novel Updates Forum
The original Adventurer's Guild (Version 1) began as a single thread in the Community Games section of the Novel Updates Forum in July 2016. It was originally GM'd by @ldyrdy and later by @shad12ow. The game was immensely popular and rapidly collected over a hundred players who wanted something casual to do in their free time. Every day, the GM would post a handful of "quests" and players could write "Quest Reports" about how their character completed a chosen quest. A team of staff receptionists read Quest Reports and graded them based on whether the quest objectives were completed successfully. Characters would gain EXP, level up, and gain ranks.
The original Receptionist Desk thread eventually collected over 3,000 posts and the "Tavern" thread (for random chatter) collected over 160,000 posts. In either case, it goes to say that it was extremely popular. Later on, additional threads were added -- like a Quest Board, Shops, Events, Raids, Dungeons, Crafting, and more. The roleplay was extremely freeform and there were few rules. Power creep was a major issue in the original guild, and eventually there were extremely overpowered characters like Planet-Eaters, goddesses, and more. Nonetheless, many players gained extremely fond memories from playing the original Adventurer's Guild. Eventually, it died when the main staff became inactive.
A reboot of the Adventurer's Guild (Version 2) was started by aliceshiki in January 2019. A custom quest system was added, and attempt was made at regulating power levels more strictly. One major feature of this version was that the staff spent a lot of effort on crafting unique quests (they were really interesting!), and many quests were not repeatable. Once a player resolved a quest, it was not open for others to take. However, this was extremely time consuming for the staff and eventually Alice could not keep up with the staff burden.
Scribble Hub Forum
Adventurer's Guild (Version 3) was started by ohko (me!) on the Scribble Hub Forum (the sister site of Novel Updates) in February 2020. This version is still active and you can go over and take a look! It's much more active than this tiny proboards site, although it is substantially less organized! We're already up to 2,000 posts on the Reception Desk thread and 14,000 posts in the OOC room! The major difference between this version and the prior versions are (1) design changes that enable a staff-less game, meaning that players peer-review each other's quest reports without staff input, (2) greater emphasis on worldbuilding, and (3) much stricter power levels.
Proboards
I started this site Adventurer's Guild (Version 4) because the original AG model felt cramped. It's hard to run a game where everything happens in one or two threads, and it's hard to keep up with everything that happens unless you dedicate a lot of time to the game (which unfortunately I have a limited amount of :c). I grew up roleplaying since 2006 (and in fact I admin'd a few two animal/wolf rp sites for a period of time), so starting a small splinter site on proboards made a lot of sense. Additionally, I thought it would be nice to combine the "quest" system of the original Adventurer's Guild with a more conventional roleplay system to see what happens. Hopefully, it works out! Honestly, I haven't used proboards/jcink other rp sites regularly since 2013, so I'm very rusty! I would definitely appreciate any help!
A special shoutout to Generic Archdemon Feathers95 epsil GDLiZy @alice and many others who popped over from the Scribble Hub site to help get this one off the ground.
Every version of Adventurer's Guild has so far been unique (with a different setting), so we'll see how far this one goes!
