BIOGRAPHY
In a faraway land, Maren was born as the only human child of the powerful Wicked Witch of West. His mother raised him alone, and Maren grew up deeply admiring his mother and her ability with the forces of nature. However, in their world, only girls could become witches — so it was impossible for Maren to learn witchcraft. Maren's mother also refused to teach him.
Despite the barriers, Maren ran away from home at a young age and crossdressed to enter an academy for witches. As "Mara", he (she) spent much of primary school at a witchcraft academy struggling to learn magic, although biological differences consistently made him the worst in the entire class. He would have flunked out of school entirely if not for that fact that Maren had solid grades in theoretical classes even though he never passed a single practical examination with satisfactory marks.
At some point in high school, Maren's sex was accidentally discovered. After a flurry of intense drama, Maren was kicked out of the academy and he was never allowed to graduate. As a high school drop out, Maren spent a few years struggling to find a job. He ended up becoming a dishwasher at a small hot spring hotel. One evening, he was thrown into the swimming pool when being bullied by his coworkers and ended up in the world of Probos.

APPEARANCE
Maren has an androgynous appearance and vibrantly colored purple hair. Neither of these features of his appearance are natural. Witches in Maren's world are typically distinguished from ordinary humans by oddly colored hair and extended lifespans. To pass himself off as a witch, the young Maren used a potion to permanently change the color of his hair. He also regularly took herbal medications that suppressed puberty, so his voice can still sound quite androgynous.
These days, Maren is still struggling to figure out how he wants to express himself. He spent almost the entirety of his school years (age 8-16) living as a girl, and the more recent transition back to living as a man has been especially challenging for him.

PERSONALITY
Maren is a soft-hearted individual with an idealistic sense of justice. Although his mother is the Wicked Witch of the West, Maren grew up with a special attachment to his teachers at the witchcraft academy who spoke extensively of doing selfless good deeds for people who have less means. "People with great power have great responsibility" — so goes their motto. As such, Maren believes that witchcraft should be used for the betterment of all living things.
Gender is a somewhat complicated issue for Maren. He doesn't have an intrinsically strong sense of gender identity, but growing up on both sides of the spectrum has rendered him especially attached to certain of features of each. It is complicated further by the fact that not many people are open to his unusual expression of gender.
Although Maren was not bullied in his youth and lived a happy childhood — the drama when he was "outed" in his later young adult years have made life significantly more difficult. In his original world, Maren's coworkers at the hot spring would harass and persecute him for being the "f*g crossdresser", but Maren would put up with it because he needed his job badly.

Basic Mana Manipulation. Ability to sense and manipulate magical energy in the environment. However, as a witch apprentice who was kicked out of school (and consistently flunked exams), Maren can't do very much with it.
