Orpheus Quest (2)
It couldn't hurt to brush up on the basics
Orpheus steadily made his way towards Sensei Gaiden's House. He wanted to know how weak he had become, he understood that the portal took his strength but, did it also take his experience? He needed an answer.
Sensei Gaiden's house was... more of a shack. It was similar to the Adventurer's Guild with the only difference being the hammock placed in between two coconut trees, which had a bald mer man lounging in it.
"Sensei Gaiden?" Knowing that this was probably him, Orpheus still asked just to be sure.
"What do you want?"
"I'm here for the Basic Combat Training Quest."
"Oh, you're one of those otherworlders." He lifted his sunglasses and looked at Orpheus, eyeing him up and down. "Come with me."
He lead me towards a small clearing at the back of his house.
"Weapon of choice?"
"Sword and Shield."
"I'll only do one at a time."
"Why."
Giving out a gasp as he's heard it a thousand times, Gaiden gave out an answer.
"Son. I don't believe in training two weapons at a time. Sword and Shield training usually goes like this: Attack with the sword, and defend with a shield. What happens if you lose one of them then? You'd either be left defenceless or offenceless. With my training, that won't matter. You'll learn how to use each weapon independently and when you do, dual wielding them both will come as second nature to you."
He does make some sense. I'm not in any position to argue either. He's the only one offering Basic Combat Training after all.
"Sword then."
"Alright." Gaiden handed a sword towards Orpheus.
"First. A trial battle. On the count of three." He readied himself in a battle stance.
Orpheus responded by shifting into a battle stance from his memory; however his body resisted, tensing up.
"One."
"Two.
Orpheus got ready to strike, holding his sword in front of him.
"Three."
Gaiden dashed towards Orpheus, who tried to dodge, just like he had thousands of times.
THUMP
Gaiden stood over the knocked down Orpheus, his sword pointed at Orpheus's neck.
"How."
"Judging from that sorry attempt of a battle stance, I'm guessing you did combatant back in your old world. I hate to tell you this but, the Reflecting Pool doesn't just rob people of their skills, but their body also gets reset to that of an average civilian." Gaiden said as he put the sword away from Orpheus's neck.
Orpheus let out a big sigh. The worst scenario had come true. He had spent so much time, so much effort, the things he did. For what? He failed in the end. He was a failure.
Gaiden sat next to Orpheus and gave him a small inspiring speech. "Listen son. Stop dwelling in the past, there's nothing you can do about it now. All you can think about is the future and if you still can't think of that. You can think about your swordsmanship. Now get up! You've got a quest to finish."
After hearing that, Orpheus let out a slight smile. He was right, there was nothing he could do about the past. But as for the future, he could do everything. He wouldn't be held back by being poor, by some stupid hero or anything anymore! He had nothing holding him back now. Last time, he became the hero's companion, maybe this time he'll become something greater.
Orpheus quickly got up and prepared himself for a rigorous day of sword training.
