Market Guidelines
'CUZ WE ALL WANT TO BUY STUFF WITH OUR MONEY
A. NPC SHOP GUIDELINES
Players can create NPC shops, but they need to be approved by at least one other member through peer review.
NPC shops should match the setting and location. Similar to the Quest Board Guidelines, NPC shops located in Myrtle Village should not be selling dragon scale if there are no dragons nearby.
If you're unsure about how prices, we recommend using the real-world as a reference for prices, where 1 Shell ($) ≈ 1 USD. You can find Earth prices for almost anything on google, ebay, or amazon — just round the number.
Keep in mind that Probos is a medieval fantasy setting, so we recommend inflating prices for items that obviously significantly cheaper with modern technology (e.g. factory-made). Myrtle Village is a little bit like a third-world country, so many civilians survive on impoverished wages like 10$ per day.
As a rule of thumb, retail prices are generally 200% higher than wholesale prices. If a shopkeeper pays 10$ for a laborer to collect firewood, it will generally be sold in the store for 20$.
Shipping costs are around 0.5$/kg/day. If your NPC shop in Myrtle Village sells herbs obtained from a different village 3 days away, the price should be 2$/kg higher. It is totally fine to estimate and wiggle around with prices.
B. PLAYER SHOP GUIDELINES
Generally speaking, players should not be opening physical shops unless they have the money (and time) to rent a space and spend all day at the working at the shop. Alternatively, you would need to hire a shopkeeper while your character is away.
Like NPC shops, player shops also need peer review. However, the standards are more relaxed, and players are welcome to come up with prices themselves. However, please do not crash the local economy.
This means that you shouldn't be selling potions for dirt cheap when all the other NPCs in a location are selling it at a much higher price. Wouldn't they all be angry at you? The local authorities might end up paying you a visit.
C. BARTERING AND TRADING
If you want to sell stuff to other players but don't want to open an actual shop, the easiest solution is to sell out of your pocket.
You can start a thread in the Bartering Sub-Board that lists all the things in your inventory that you want to sell. However, any players that want to do business with you have to physically find your character wherever they might be in the universe.
D. NEGOTIATING WITH NPCS
Prices in shops are flexible to some degree, and it's okay to "haggle" with the NPC among other things. However, try not to go overboard. For instance, if you have your character bully a shopkeeper to get a discount, it would make sense that other shopkeepers in the same location might refuse to do business with you in the future. Try to imagine what the NPC might feel.
You can sell things to NPC shops, but generally speaking they will offer to pay 50% of the retail price to you. You can negotiate that number higher, but don't go above a 75% margin.
